a beautiful second edition of my qpr propaganda comic

i wasn't quite happy with how the initial print of my latest uni comic came out. the paper i used is too cold a white, the green, which i printed digitally for (apparent) lack of a forest green for our riso (turns out we do actually have that, it just wasn't included on the colour overview i was given), turned out too dark and totally overpowered the black in some places, and the riso-black couldn't hold properly on the digitally-printed areas (and the paper generally, it seems), so it turned out sort of pale. plus, i wasn't really happy with the title font.

so, right when i had finished that first edition, i resolved to do a second printrun once i'd have a bit of time. august has kind of been one of the busiest months my year so far, but i did end up scheduling my riso appointments throughout it. and now i have a beautiful second edition of my comic (and something else that will be finished next week when i can go back to cut and staple it):

and she is burble!! but not just that...

multiple colourways, baby! this is because i wanted a non-white paper for the cover (to minimise the ugly-effect of potential smearing/dirtying of it) but i couldn't decide on one colour. so i did these three, orange, pink and purple. they all work, which i'm very happy about but i do think purple is my favourite. says the guy dressed entirely in purple.

you may also notice that the green isn't the same forest green of the original/first edition. instead, it's a beautiful teal. this, i'd been initially unsure about because, while i like the colour in itself, i was afraid, it'd come off as too blue in the end, and i didn't really wanna compromise on my forest green for the first edition (and again, at the time i was under the impression that we don't have forest green for the riso). but for the second edition, i'd since tried out the teal and felt more ready to divert from my initial colour concept, so i locked in on that. and i really really like it. it works especially well together with the colours of the cover, i think.

you can also see here the slight variance in the coverart. i removed the labelling of the mushrooms because i think they do ultimately irritate rather than reading as part of the art. and of course i changed the title design. this collage-type doesn't really have a conceptual reasoning to it and was initially just something i wanted to try out as an option among others, but i liked it so much i just kept it.

another cool thing that you can see a little here: i dyed the cover paper myself. well, i just painted it front and back with watercolours. and my goal was to have it be as evenly dyed as possible, but then this happened:

the transparent paper i used to separate the wet sheets for pressing & drying (obviously) warped and crinkled and imprinted that pattern onto the underside of the paper. when i realised this, it initially threw me off (not being part of the plan), but! it is so reminiscent of mycelium, which is awesome, really! and now i love the look of it.

so yeah, all in all, this second print/production run was definitely worth it! i love how it turned out so much, it's so pretty! and i learned from the previous time and was able to tweak some things during production to get an altogether cleaner result.

make some physical art this weekend! it feels soooo good.
