i have devised a venn diagram:
it proposes a categorisation of music based on four categories and the sub-categories that result from their overlap. the main categories are:
song that is about sex
song that isn't about sex
song that is sex
song that isn't sex
in their overlap, music can be:
about sex and also sex
about sex but not sex
not about sex but sex, and
not about sex and also not sex
note that a song cannot be about sex and not about sex, or be sex and not be sex at the same time (though, maybe there is an argument to be made for songs that are actually those things) and accordingly, a three- or four-way overlap also isn't possible.
now that i think about it, this could've been a two-dimensional spectrum type graph. you know:
i guess you can use whichever one you like.
anyway. what does "is about sex" and "is sex" even mean? for myself, i've defined the categories as follows:
"is/isn't about sex", is the textual, maybe also the subtextual. it's when, if you read the lyrics, if you hear the words, it's clear that it's about sex and/or (physical) intimacy. many songs fall into this category, i'm sure. because people love sex.
"is/isn't sex" is about the music, the delivery, the lyricism. my friends have of their own accord added the identifying question "is this a song you could have sex to/that would put you into the mood?", but i am famously asexual, so i don't really know about that. personally, i can't really pin down what makes a song be sex to me, but i think it's about a certain subtlety and poeticism in the lyrics, but most importantly just a sonic experience that does something with me. a light, breathy, or epic quality in the vocal delivery, if there is any. it's a difficult category to pin down and i'm sure it'll be different for everyone.
my friends and i have at least agreed on these four songs as examples of each (overlap) category:
Hey Alexa by Baran Kok sparked this whole thing for me. it's a song i heard and immediately found so profoundly unsexy. the lyrics are extremely sex-focused/-themed, and quite explicit, but so much so that to me, it's not even really about sex anymore but rather about being provocative. it's a statement rather than a genuine expression of lust/intimacy. to me. not to mention that musically, it just doesn't do anything for me in that direction.
Waterparks' Nobody But You is about sex. it is also a very sexy song. Awsten Knight's vocal delivery, the music, the lyrics. very tasteful, makes me want to move like i'm trying to seduce someone.
Eat Your Young by Hozier is not about sex, it's about uhhh generational conflict, war, things like that. but we all know that Hozier makes sex music regardless of textual message. and the line I'm starvin', darlin', let me put my lips to something / Let me wrap my teeth around the world makes me sooooo. raugh. makes me think about making out more than anything else.
Axel F by Crazy Frog was my friend's suggestion for isn't about sex/isn't sex but as we were listening to it, he kind of went. Wait, actually. What if.... which is crazy and i'm keeping it in that category. supremely unsexy song.
yeah. that's all i've got to say about this, i think. it's really just a fun silly thought game to play, and it's interesting to examine what (to you) makes music sexy. and to me it's extra interesting to look at because i don't have a defined idea of what "sexy" means to me. so i'm kind of just going off this vague concept that's based entirely in vibes. it's fun!
feel free to share your song picks and their placements for this. i'm especially interested in songs that are neither sex nor about sex, because we actually kind of struggled thinking of examples.

also small life update maybe:
i haven't made a post in a billion years because really, all i've been doing is working (it's still fine!) and sitting on the train to hang out with my bestie in the house where we live. so nothing much has been happening. we went to the theatre on saturday, into a performance of Blutbuch (adapted from Kim de l'Horizon's book Blutbuch) and it was sooo good and so gorgeous and much fun!! made me want to go to the theatre more (also because there is a person who works there who intrigues meeee but shhh).
but yea, posting may stay slow until february because work and train rides will be all i'll really be doing. i'm reading a lot though, so if you're interested in that, check in with my book reports every once in a while!
hope you're doing well! handheart :3
